Rainbow City AL chef stirring sauceDeciding to become a chef and enrolling in a culinary institute near Rainbow City AL is a great career choice. Not only will you be taught how to cook incredible dishes or prepare elegant desserts, you’ll also be able to earn a good living doing it. But now that you’ve made the decision, just how do you set about picking a culinary school? What requirements should you research and compare among the cooking colleges before arriving at your final choice ? Keep in mind that you must choose the appropriate program and degree in order to be successful in the restaurant and hospitality fields. There are a wide range of options to select from, beginning with a certificate or diploma program and progressing to earning an undergraduate or even a graduate degree. You can enroll in a small culinary school, an online college, or enroll in a renowned culinary institute that provides more advanced degrees.

The kind of credential and school you pick will probably be based on the amount of time and money you can afford to commit, as well as your ultimate career goal. Once you have decided what your primary area of interest and budget are, you can start examining the culinary arts schools that satisfy your initial requirements. Depending upon the degree and type of culinary school you choose, you can be working as a professional cook or chef in as little as six months. Naturally advanced degrees and training will take longer, which we will cover shortly. So before we delve more into the process of picking a school, let’s speak a little more about the degree and culinary school options that are available near Rainbow City AL.

Culinary College Degree Programs

students training at Rainbow City AL culinary arts schoolJust as with a number of other industries or professions in Rainbow City AL, there are multiple degree options that are offered in the culinary arts. At the most elemental level, you can sign up for a nearby cooking course, which are more casual in nature and can last from just a few hours to a few weeks. Typically a certificate or a diploma is offered at the time of completion. They can be broad in nature, for instance teaching how to cook French dishes, or they may be quite specific and concentrate on one dish, such as Crepes Suzette. Of course if you are searching for a more conventional education applicable for a career in the restaurant industry, you will most likely want to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be required to commit significantly more time.

  • Associate’s Degrees can require as long as six months to two years to complete.
  • Bachelor’s Degrees generally entail as much as 4 years of instruction.
  • Masters Degrees can take an added two years or more after attaining a Bachelor’s.

Even more advanced training alternatives may be available, such as Doctoral or specialized programs made available by culinary arts institutes. Probably the most important point to remember when deciding on which degree to pursue is ensuring that it furnishes the credential and education necessary to advance your ultimate career goals.

Options for Culinary Arts Institutes

students training at Rainbow City AL chef schoolAfter you have made your selection regarding the kind of instruction and degree that you want to pursue, you can launch your search for the culinary arts school, college or institute that offers it. For example, if your goal is to train to be a chef specializing in Italian cuisine, then obviously you will focus on those colleges that provide the appropriate training. Or you can select an institute based on its ranking or other criteria (we’ll review several of those later) and then select the most suitable degree program available that is consistent with your career goals in Rainbow City AL. However you arrive at your decision, culinary schools normally fall under 3 different categories:

  • Cooking Schools. A few cooking schools do offer degree programs, but in most cases they offer diplomas or certificates. Their courses tend to be more specialized in nature, and they can range anywhere from 1 or 2 months to as long as three or four years.
  • Community Colleges. Local community colleges tend to be more affordable than most private colleges and many have outstanding programs. They almost solely offer Associate’s Degrees and are founded and managed by either state or local governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The more advanced degrees and training are provided by culinary arts schools and institutes. Several institutes provide the most highly regarded as well as the highest level of training in academia. Unfortunately, since they are private institutions they often can be more expensive than their public counterparts, some much more.

Selecting a culinary institute will not only be based on the type of program or degree you wish to pursue, but also how much you have to invest in your education. If you decide to attend a public school to minimize costs, remember that out-of-state residents normally have to pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. In addition, a lot of community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition fees for local residents. So make sure to look into the public alternatives within Alabama and also within the Rainbow City AL area to find the most economical options.

Culinary Online Colleges

One option is to enroll in online training within the comfort of one’s residence. The practicality and flexibility makes it the only solution for many students that continue working full-time while going to college. In addition there are more schools online than ever before that are accredited. Bear in mind that a considerable part of the instruction will be furnished through an externship. Externships are programs where students work with local chefs or other cooking professionals so that they receive practical training outside of the virtual classroom. Just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized agency (more on this later). So if you are dedicated enough to be able to attend classes and study in this more independent method, attaining a culinary arts degree online just might be the best option for you.

Researching Culinary Arts Colleges

Questions to ask Rainbow City AL culinary schoolsBy now you should have made a decision regarding the type of degree that you want to attain, and whether or not you would like to enroll in a public or private college. Since there are numerous culinary arts programs in the Rainbow City area and across the Country, you need to create a checklist of essential qualifications so that you can begin narrowing your options. Certain obvious qualifiers, including location and cost are an excellent place to begin. But deciding on a school because it is the nearest or the least expensive is not the ideal way to decide on your education. There are other factors, such as accreditation and reputation that you need to review as well. Therefore, following are some critical areas that you will need to investigate for every school as you compare them and make your ultimate decision.

Accreditation.  It’s imperative that the culinary arts school you choose has some type of accreditation from either a local or a national agency. As previously mentioned, the accrediting agency should be a U.S. Department of Education recognized agency, for instance the American Culinary Federation (ACF). ACF accredited schools have passed a thorough evaluation regarding their curriculum, teachers and facilities. So not only does accreditation help confirm that you will receive exceptional training, but it may also help in acquiring a student loan or financial assistance which are generally not offered for non-accredited schools.

Age.  Recently established schools often have the benefit of having modern facilities and equipment. However, they may not have been in operation long enough to acquire an accreditation or to cultivate a reputation. On the other hand, older schools may still be using their original, outdated equipment, but have established a sustained track record of success and earned one or more accreditations. Also, the longer a school has operated, the more graduates the school can reach out to for its job assistance program. Naturally there is some give and take dependent on the age of the culinary schools. And older, more renowned schools usually update their equipment and facilities. The valuable lesson is that in the best case scenario, your school of choice will have an exceptional reputation, accreditation and a state-of-the-art facility with newer equipment.

Job Placement Rates.  First, find out what the graduation rates are for the culinary arts programs you are reviewing. Low graduation rates are red flags that a number of students were unhappy with either the schools or the training and dropped out. They can also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to teach the course of study. Ask the schools to supply their job placement rates also. If a college has a higher job placement rate, it will help confirm that it has a great or excellent reputation within the cooking field, in addition to a wide network of professional contacts. Watch out for any school that will not furnish this information.

Location.  The cooking institute that you enroll in should be within driving distance of your Rainbow City home, unless you have decided to relocate. You may consider attending classes online, but you would still need to travel for your externship training. On the other hand, maybe you have chosen to attend a specific culinary school located in another state due to its reputation and courses offered. It would be a wise decision to pay a visit to the facility before enrolling, to make sure that you are satisfied with the area and your potential living conditions. Tour the training facilities personally to make sure they are modern and that the equipment is state of the art. Remember also that a number of schools focus their job placement programs within their local communities, so choose a location where you will enjoy working.

Class Sizes.  The ideal approach to learn how to cook is with plenty of personalized instruction. If the culinary program you enroll in has larger classes, you will most likely get limited personal attention from the instructors. The best way to assess the interaction and communication between teachers and students is to sit in on several of the classes. Ask some of the students what their experience has been. Ascertain if they are happy with the level of attention they receive in class in addition to the overall training. Also, talk with a few of the instructors and determine what their teaching philosophies are together with their experiences and credentials.

Flexible Class Schedules.  There is no sense in enrolling in a culinary arts school if you will not be able to attend the classes. Therefore make certain that the school you select has available class scheduling that will fit in with your active lifestyle. If you can only attend at night or on weekends due to your job schedule, verify that the school you select offers either weekend or evening classes. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, verify that the cooking school has a part-time alternative. Also, find out what the make-up policy is if you have to miss a class due to work, family or other responsibilities.

Enrolling in a  Culinary Arts Program near Rainbow City Alabama?

If you are considering attending culinary school near Rainbow City AL, following is some interesting and useful information about the location of your new school campus.

Rainbow City, Alabama

This city was named after U.S. Highway 411, called Rainbow Drive, which runs through the middle of the city.[5] Some of the older citizens say it was named after the US 42nd Infantry Division, known as the "Rainbow Division".

As early as 1818, families from the Carolinas and Georgia began to migrate to the area and homestead land near the Coosa River. Hernando de Soto's troops were the first visitors to the area in 1540, and today a bridge stands where the Pensacola Trading Path crossed the Coosa River. A paved highway now traces the trail that was cut from Nashville to Horseshoe Bend by Andrew Jackson on his way to fight the Creek Native Americans in what is now known as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

Originally called "Coosa Bend", the area was later called "Morgan's Cross Road". It was located at the intersection of the Gadsden-Ashville Road and Gilbert's Ferry Road. The land was passed from Edmond Jones to his son Clayton, who never married. When he died, the land passed to his sister, Luvica Morgan, who was also the wife of William Morgan.

Knowing the importance of education, John Sheffield Jones, the grandson of Edmond Jones, an original settler, donated $1,000 and the land for the construction of the first John S. Jones Elementary School. Later, John S. Jones burned to the ground and a new elementary school was built and serves the Rainbow City area today. Rainbow Middle School and the Westbrook Christian School, also serve the Rainbow City students today.
