Not only will you be taught how to cook spectacular dishes or make fancy desserts, you’ll also be able to make a good living doing it. But now that you’ve decided, exactly how do you undertake choosing a culinary college? What requirements should you consider and compare among the cooking institutes before making your ultimate choice ? Remember that you must select the ideal program and degree if you want to be successful in the restaurant and hospitality fields. There are a wide range of options to pick from, beginning with a diploma or certificate program and advancing to attaining an undergraduate as well as a graduate degree. You may enroll in a small culinary school, an online program, or enroll in a renowned culinary institute that offers more advanced degrees.

The kind of credential and school you select will undoubtedly be dependent upon the amount of time and money you can afford to spend, in addition to your ultimate career goal. After you have determined what your main area of interest and budget are, you can begin examining the cooking colleges that satisfy your initial qualifications. Depending on the degree and type of culinary school you choose, you could be employed as a professional cook or chef in just six months. Obviously advanced degrees and training will take more time, which we will cover shortly. So before we dig more into the system of choosing a school, let’s speak a little bit more about the degree and culinary school alternatives that are available near Galena AK.

Culinary Arts Institute Degree Programs

students training at Galena AK culinary arts schoolAs with a number of other trades or professions in Galena AK, there are multiple degree options that are available in the culinary arts. At the most elemental level, you can sign up for a nearby cooking course, which are more casual in nature and can last from just a few hours to a few weeks. Typically a diploma or a certificate is awarded upon completion. They may be broad in nature, such as teaching how to cook Italian meals, or they can be rather targeted and focus on one dish, such as Crepes Suzette. Naturally if you are looking for a more formal education suitable for a career in the restaurant industry, you will probably choose to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be obligated to devote significantly more time.

  • Associate’s Degrees can take anywhere from six months to two years to complete.
  • Bachelor’s Degrees generally call for as much as four years of instruction.
  • Masters Degrees may take an added 2 years or more after attaining a Bachelor’s.

More advanced training options may be available, including Doctoral or specialized programs offered by culinary arts institutes. The most important issue to bear in mind when determining which degree to strive for is making sure that it furnishes the education and degree necessary to advance your ultimate career objectives.

Kinds of Cooking Colleges

For instance, if your desire is to become a chef specializing in Italian cuisine, then obviously you will concentrate on those colleges that furnish the appropriate training. Or you can opt for a school based on its reputation or other factors (we’ll discuss several of those later) and then select the most ideal degree program offered that is compatible with your career objectives in Galena AK. However you arrive at your decision, culinary arts schools typically fit within three distinct categories:

  • Cooking Schools. Certain cooking schools do offer degree programs, but typically they offer certificates or diplomas. Their programs tend to be more focused in nature, and they can range anywhere from a couple of months to as long as three or four years.
  • Community Colleges. Local community colleges can often be more inexpensive than the majority of private schools and a large number have exceptional programs. They almost solely offer Associate’s Degrees and are established and managed by either state or local governments.
  • Culinary Arts Schools and Institutes. The more advanced degrees and training are offered by culinary colleges and institutes. Several institutes provide the most highly regarded and highest standard of training in academia. However, since they are private institutions they often can be more costly than their public counterparts, some a lot more.

Picking a culinary school will not only be based on the type of program or degree you wish to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to spend on your education. If you decide to attend a public school to lower expenses, keep in mind that out-of-state residents normally have to pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. In addition, a lot of community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition charges for local residents. So make sure to research the public options within Alaska as well as within the Galena AK area to find the most economical options.

Culinary Arts Online Degree Programs

One option is to attend online training within the convenience of one’s residence. The convenience and flexibility makes it the one solution for a number of students that continue working full time while going to classes. Also there are more programs online than ever before that are accredited. Keep in mind that a considerable part of the training will be provided through an externship. Externships are programs where students train under area chefs or other culinary arts practitioners to ensure that they receive practical training outside of the online classroom. Just make certain that the online school you enroll in is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged organization (more on this later). So if you are dedicated enough to be able to attend classes and study in this more independent fashion, attaining a culinary arts online degree might be the best option for you.

Evaluating Cooking Colleges

Questions to ask Galena AK culinary schoolsAt this point you should have decided on the type of degree that you wish to earn, and if you would like to enroll in a public or private institution. Since there are numerous cooking colleges in the Galena area and within the USA, you need to create a checklist of essential qualifications so that you can begin narrowing down your choices. A few obvious qualifiers, for instance cost and location are a good place to begin. But picking a school because it is the closest or the cheapest is not the ideal way to make a decision regarding your education. There are other criteria, for example reputation and accreditation that you must evaluate also. Therefore, below are some critical areas that you need to research for each school as you compare and contrast them and make your ultimate choice.

Accreditation.  It’s imperative that the cooking school you select has some form of accreditation from either a local or a national agency. As aforementioned, the accrediting organization should be a U.S. Department of Education recognized authority, such as the American Culinary Federation (ACF). ACF accredited schools have successfully completed a detailed evaluation relating to their curriculum, teachers and facilities. Therefore not only does accreditation help confirm that you will receive excellent training, but it may also help in acquiring a student loan or financial aid which are generally not offered for non-accredited schools.

Age.  Newer schools often have the benefit of possessing modern facilities and equipment. However, they may not have been in operation long enough to earn an accreditation or to establish a reputation. On the other hand, more established schools may still be using their original, dated equipment, but have established a long history of excellence and obtained one or more accreditations. Also, the longer a school has been in business, the more alumni the school can solicit for its job assistance program. Certainly there is some give and take dependent on the age of the culinary arts schools. And older, more reputable schools typically update their equipment and facilities. The significant lesson is that in the best case scenario, your chosen school will have an exceptional reputation, accreditation and a modern facility with newer equipment.

Job Placement Rates.  First, ask what the graduation rates are for the culinary colleges you are looking at. Low graduation rates are indications that a number of students were dissatisfied with either the institutes or the courses and quit before graduating. They might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to teach the curriculum. Request that the schools supply their job placement rates also. If a school has a higher job placement rate, it will help validate that it has a good or excellent reputation within the culinary arts community, as well as a broad network of professional associations. Be suspicious of any school that will not supply this information.

Location.  The cooking college that you attend must be within commuting distance of your Galena residence, unless you are able to move. You may think about attending school online, but you would still need to travel for your externship program. On the other hand, perhaps you have decided to go to a specific culinary college located in another state because of its prominence and programs offered. It would be a wise decision to check out the campus before enrolling, to make sure that you are satisfied with the area and your prospective living conditions. Inspect the training facilities personally to make sure they are modern and that the equipment is contemporary. Keep in mind also that some schools focus their job assistance programs within their regional communities, so select a location where you will be happy working.

Class Sizes.  The ideal way to learn how to cook is with lots of one-on-one instruction. If the cooking school you enroll in has large classes, you will probably get minimal personal attention from the teachers. The optimal way to evaluate the interaction and communication between teachers and students is to sit in on some of the classes. Ask a couple of the students what their experience has been. Ascertain if they are happy with the amount of attention they get in class in addition to the entire course of training. Also, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their teaching philosophies are along with their backgrounds and credentials.

Flexible Class Schedules.  There is no point in enrolling in a culinary arts school if you will not be able to attend the classes. Therefore make sure that the school you decide on offers class scheduling that will fit in with your hectic lifestyle. If you can only attend at night or on Saturdays or Sundays because of your job schedule, confirm that the school you select offers either weekend or night classes. If you can only attend part-time, confirm that the culinary school has a part-time alternative. Also, find out what the make-up policy is if you need to miss a class due to work, family or other commitments.

Enrolling in a  Culinary Arts Program near Galena Alaska?

If you are considering attending culinary school near Galena AK, following is some interesting and useful information about the location of your new school campus.

Galena, Alaska

Galena (/ɡəˈliːnə/) (Notaalee Denh in Koyukon) is a city in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. At the 2010 census the population was 470, with a 2016 estimate of 488 inhabitants. Galena was established in 1918, and a military airfield was built adjacent to the city during World War II. The city was incorporated in 1971.

The Koyukon Athabascans had seasonal camps in the area and moved as the wild game migrated. In the summer many families floated on rafts to the Yukon River to fish for salmon. There were 12 summer fish camps located on the Yukon River between the Koyukuk River and the Nowitna River. Galena was established in 1918 near an Athabascan fish camp called Henry's Point. It became a supply and point for nearby lead ore mines that opened in 1918 and 1919.[5]

In 1941 and 1942, during World War II,[5] a military air field was built adjacent to the civilian airport, and the two facilities shared the runway and flight line facilities. This air field was designated Galena Air Force Station shortly after the split of the United States Air Force from the United States Army, which occurred as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. During the 1950s, the construction of additional military facilities at Galena and the nearby Campion Air Force Station, in support of Galena's mission as a forward operating base under the auspices of the 5072nd Air Base Group, headquartered at Elmendorf Air Force Base, near Anchorage, provided improvements to the airport and the local infrastructure, causing economic growth for the area.[citation needed]

Following the end of the Cold War, in 1993, operation of Galena Air Force Station was turned over to a contractor, and all military personnel were withdrawn with only small groups of active personnel visiting the base on an as-needed basis.[5] The former military facility remains in use effectively as a forward operating location that is used[citation needed] occasionally by the military. This use came under scrutiny by the Base Realignment and Closure Committee in the late 2000s[6] and was officially closed October 1, 2010. The Air Force retains responsibility for toxin cleanup in the area and engineers from Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks still visit the site on occasion.[citation needed] The base is now totally controlled by the City of Galena, the Galena School District and the Alaska Department of Transportation. The Alaska Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) was pursuing[when?] retaining one of the F-16 fighter hangars as a CAP facility for the CAP Wing in Galena, the "Yukon Squadron".[citation needed]
