Not only will you learn how to cook incredible dishes or make fancy desserts, you’ll also be able to earn a good living doing it. However, now that you’ve decided, just how do you set about selecting a culinary arts college? What qualifications should you research and compare among the culinary institutes before making your ultimate choice ? Bear in mind that you must pick the right program and degree in order to be a success in the hospitality and restaurant business. There are a wide variety of options to select from, beginning with a diploma or certificate program and advancing to attaining an undergraduate or even a graduate degree. You may enroll in a small baking college, an online program, or enroll in a large culinary institute that provides advanced degrees.

The kind of degree and school you select will undoubtedly be based upon the amount of money and time you can afford to spend, as well as your ultimate career objective. After you have determined what your primary area of interest and budget are, you can begin evaluating the culinary arts programs that meet your initial qualifications. Depending on the certification and type of culinary school you decide on, you may be employed as a professional chef or cook in as little as 6 months. Of course more advanced degrees and training will take more time, which we will discuss shortly. So before we dig more into the system of picking a school, let’s speak a little bit more about the degree and culinary school options that are available near Paint Rock AL.

Cooking College Degree Options

students training at Paint Rock AL culinary arts schoolJust as with numerous other professions or trades in Paint Rock AL, there are multiple degree options that are available in the culinary arts. At the most elemental level, you can enroll in a local cooking course, which are more casual in nature and can run from several hours to a few weeks. Often a diploma or a certificate is presented at the time of completion. They may be broad in nature, such as demonstrating how to cook Italian meals, or they may be rather targeted and concentrate on one dish, for instance Crepes Suzette. Of course if you are looking for a more formal education geared towards a career in the restaurant industry, you will undoubtedly choose to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be required to invest significantly more time.

  • Associate’s Degrees can require anywhere from 6 months to two years to finish.
  • Bachelor’s Degrees generally entail as much as 4 years of training.
  • Masters Degrees may take an added 2 years or even longer after attaining a Bachelor’s.

More advanced degree options may be offered, including specialized or Doctoral programs offered by culinary arts institutes. The most important point to keep in mind when deciding on which degree to strive for is ensuring that it furnishes the credential and education necessary to advance your ultimate career goals.

Kinds of Culinary Schools

For example, if your goal is to become a chef specializing in German cuisine, then of course you will focus on those schools that furnish the suitable training. Or you can choose an institute based on its ranking or other criteria (we’ll review several of those later) and then choose the most ideal degree program available that is compatible with your career goals in Paint Rock AL. However you make your choice, cooking schools normally fit within three distinct categories:

  • Cooking Schools. A few cooking schools do offer degree programs, but generally they offer diplomas or certificates. Their programs tend to be more specialized in nature, and they can range anywhere from 1 or 2 months to as long as three to four years.
  • Community Colleges. Area community colleges can often be more economical than the majority of private schools and many have exceptional programs. They almost exclusively offer Associate’s Degrees and are founded and managed by either state or local governments.
  • Culinary Arts Schools and Institutes. The more advanced degrees and training are provided by culinary schools and institutes. Some institutes provide the most respected and highest level of training in academia. However, since they are private institutions they tend to be more costly than their public counterparts, some much more.

Choosing a culinary arts school will not only be based on the type of degree or program you want to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to invest in your education. If you decide to enroll in a public school to reduce expenses, remember that out-of-state residents generally must pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. Furthermore, numerous community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition rates for local residents. So make sure to look into the public alternatives within Alabama as well as within the Paint Rock AL area to locate the most affordable options.

Cooking Online Schools

One alternative is to attend online classes within the comfort of one’s home. The practicality and flexibility makes it the best solution for many students that continue working full-time while attending school. Plus there are more programs online than ever before that are accredited. Keep in mind that a substantial component of the training will be furnished through an externship. Externships are programs where students work with local chefs or other cooking practitioners to ensure that they obtain hands-on training outside of the online classroom. Just make certain that the online school you enroll in is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized organization (more on this later). So if you are disciplined enough to be able to go to classes and study in this more independent manner, attaining a culinary arts online degree just might be the best option for you.

Comparing Culinary Colleges

Questions to ask Paint Rock AL culinary schoolsBy now you should have made a decision regarding the type of degree that you plan to attain, and if you want to enroll in a private or a public school. Since there are numerous culinary arts schools in the Paint Rock area and across the United States, you must create a checklist of important qualifications so that you can begin narrowing your choices. Some obvious qualifiers, including location and cost are a good place to start. But deciding on a school because it is the closest or the least expensive is not the best way to decide on your education. There are other variables, for instance reputation and accreditation that you must assess as well. Therefore, following are some critical areas that you need to investigate for every school as you compare them and make your final selection.

Accreditation.  It’s essential that the culinary arts college you select has some form of accreditation from either a local or a national agency. As previously stated, the accrediting organization should be a U.S. Department of Education recognized organization, for example the American Culinary Federation (ACF). ACF accredited schools have passed a comprehensive evaluation relating to their curriculum, instructors and facilities. Therefore not only does accreditation help confirm that you will receive quality training, but it may also help in acquiring a student loan or financial aid which are generally not available for non-accredited schools.

Age.  Recently established schools frequently have the benefit of possessing modern equipment and facilities. However, they may not have been open long enough to earn an accreditation or to establish a reputation. On the other hand, older schools may still be using their original, outdated equipment, but have established a sustained history of excellence and acquired one or more accreditations. Also, the much more a school has been in operation, the more alumni the school can reach out to for its job placement program. Certainly there is some give and take dependent on the age of the culinary arts schools. And older, more renowned schools commonly update their facilities and equipment. The important takeaway is that in the best case scenario, your selected school will have an exceptional reputation, accreditation and a modern facility with modern equipment.

Job Placement Rates.  To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the culinary arts institutions you are looking at. Low graduation rates are red flags that many students were dissatisfied with either the schools or the training and dropped out. They may also signify that the instructors were not competent to teach the curriculum. Ask the schools to provide their job placement rates as well. If a college has a high job placement rate, it will help verify that it has a great or outstanding reputation within the cooking field, as well as a large network of professional contacts. Watch out for any school that will not supply this information.

Location.  The culinary arts institute that you enroll in should be within driving distance of your Paint Rock residence, unless you can move. You may think about attending school online, but you would still need to travel for your externship training. Conversely, maybe you have chosen to go to a particular culinary school located in another state because of its reputation and courses offered. It would be a good idea to pay a visit to the campus before enrolling, to make sure that you are satisfied with the location and your prospective living conditions. Check the training facilities personally to make sure they are modern and that the equipment is state of the art. Keep in mind also that a number of schools concentrate their job placement programs within their local communities, so pick a location where you will be happy working.

Class Sizes.  The most effective approach to learn how to cook is with plenty of one-on-one training. If the cooking program you enroll in has bigger classes, you will probably get limited individual attention from the instructors. The optimal way to assess the interaction between faculty and students is to attend a few of the classes. Ask a couple of the students what their experience has been. Ascertain if they are pleased with the amount of attention they get in class in addition to the entire course of training. Also, speak with several of the instructors and find out what their teaching styles are together with their backgrounds and credentials.

Flexible Class Schedules.  There is no sense in enrolling in a culinary arts institute if you will be unable to attend the classes. Therefore make certain that the school you choose offers class scheduling that will work with your hectic lifestyle. If you can only attend at night or on weekends due to your job schedule, make sure that the school you pick offers either weekend or evening classes. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the culinary arts college has a part-time offering. Also, check to see what the make-up policy is if you must miss a class due to work, family or other commitments.
