Montevallo AL chef stirring sauceDeciding to become a chef and enrolling in a culinary college near Montevallo AL is a great career choice. Not only will you be taught how to create spectacular meals or prepare elegant desserts, you’ll also be able to earn a nice income doing it. But now that you’ve decided, just how do you undertake picking a culinary arts institute? What criteria should you consider and compare among the cooking programs before arriving at your final selection ? Bear in mind that you must select the ideal program and degree in order to be a success in the hospitality and restaurant business. There are a wide range of options to select from, beginning with a diploma or certificate program and progressing to attaining an undergraduate or even a graduate degree. You can enroll in a small baking school, an online school, or enroll in a large culinary institute that offers advanced degree programs.

The type of credential and school you pick will probably be dependent on how much time and money you can afford to spend, together with your ultimate career goal. Once you have determined what your main area of interest and budget are, you can begin evaluating the culinary arts programs that satisfy your initial requirements. Depending on the certification and type of culinary school you choose, you can be working as a professional chef or cook in just six months. Obviously more advanced degrees and training will take more time, which we will discuss shortly. So before we delve more into the system of picking a school, let’s talk a little bit more about the degree and culinary school choices that are available near Montevallo AL.

Culinary Arts Institute Degree Options

students training at Montevallo AL culinary arts schoolAs with many other professions or trades in Montevallo AL, there are multiple degree options that are offered in the culinary arts. At the most basic level, you can join a nearby cooking course, which are more casual in nature and can last from just a few hours to several weeks. Frequently a diploma or a certificate is presented upon completion. They may be comprehensive in nature, such as demonstrating how to cook French meals, or they may be quite targeted and concentrate on one dish, such as Crepes Suzette. Of course if you are searching for a more conventional education geared towards a career in the restaurant profession, you will most likely choose to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be required to invest considerably more time.

  • Associate’s Degrees can take anywhere from 6 months to two years to complete.
  • Bachelor’s Degrees usually involve as much as 4 years of training.
  • Masters Degrees may take an additional two years or more after obtaining a Bachelor’s.

Even more advanced educational options may be available, such as Doctoral programs or specialized programs made available by culinary arts institutes. Probably the most important point to remember when determining which degree to pursue is making sure that it furnishes the credential and education necessary to advance your ultimate career objectives.

Options for Culinary Arts Institutes

students training at Montevallo AL chef schoolOnce you have made your choice regarding the type of training and degree that you wish to pursue, you can begin your search for the cooking school, college or institute that offers it. For instance, if your dream is to train to be a chef specializing in French cuisine, then obviously you will concentrate on those colleges that offer the proper training. Or you can opt for an institute based on its ranking or other criteria (we’ll review a few of those later) and then choose the best degree program offered that is consistent with your career goals in Montevallo AL. However you make your choice, cooking schools generally fall under 3 distinct categories:

  • Cooking Schools. Certain cooking schools do offer degree programs, but in most cases they offer certificates or diplomas. Their programs tend to be more specialized in nature, and they can range anywhere from 1 or 2 months to as long as three to four years.
  • Community Colleges. Area community colleges tend to be more inexpensive than the majority of private schools and many have excellent programs. They almost solely offer Associate’s Degrees and are founded and maintained by either state or local governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The more advanced degrees and training are offered by culinary arts colleges and institutes. Some institutes provide the most highly regarded as well as the highest level of training in academia. Unfortunately, since they are private schools they often can be more expensive than their public counterparts, some much more.

Choosing a culinary arts institute will not only be based on the type of program or degree you want to pursue, but also how much you have to invest in your education. If you decide to attend a public institution to minimize costs, keep in mind that out-of-state residents usually must pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. Also, many community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition charges for area residents. So make sure to research the public alternatives within Alabama as well as within the Montevallo AL area to find the most affordable options.

Online Culinary Arts Classes

woman attending online cooking school in Montevallo ALA number of potential students may find that there are no culinary programs that are within commuting proximity of their Montevallo AL residence. One option is to attend online classes within the comfort of one’s residence. The practicality and flexibility makes it the single solution for some students that continue working full time while going to school. Plus there are more schools online than ever that are accredited. Bear in mind that a substantial component of the instruction will be furnished under an externship. Externships are programs where students train under regional chefs or other culinary arts practitioners so that they receive hands-on training beyond the internet classroom. Just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged organization (more on this later). So if you are disciplined enough to be able to go to classes and study in this more independent manner, earning a cooking online degree may be the best option for you.

Researching Culinary Institutions

Questions to ask Montevallo AL culinary schoolsAt this point you should have made a decision regarding the type of degree that you plan to attain, and if you would like to enroll in a public or private institution. Since there a large number of cooking programs in the Montevallo area and across the Country, you will want to develop a checklist of essential qualifications so that you can start narrowing down your options. A few obvious qualifications, for instance location and cost are an excellent place to start. But picking a school because it is the closest or the most affordable is not the optimal way to make a decision regarding your education. There are other factors, including accreditation and reputation that you need to assess also. Therefore, below are some critical areas that you must research for each school as you compare and contrast them and make your ultimate choice.

Accreditation.  It’s very important that the culinary arts school you pick has some type of accreditation from either a regional or a national organization. As previously mentioned, the accrediting organization should be a U.S. Department of Education recognized agency, for example the American Culinary Federation (ACF). ACF accredited schools have successfully completed a comprehensive evaluation relating to their curriculum, teachers and facilities. Therefore not only does accreditation help confirm that you will receive quality training, but it may also assist in securing a student loan or financial assistance which are generally not offered for non-accredited schools.

Age.  Newer schools generally have the benefit of having modern facilities and equipment. However, they may not have been in operation long enough to garner an accreditation or to cultivate a reputation. Conversely, more established schools may still be using their original, dated equipment, but have established a long track record of excellence and received one or more accreditations. Also, the much more a school has operated, the more alumni the school can solicit for its job placement program. Naturally there is some give and take based on the age of the culinary arts schools. And older, more renowned schools usually update their facilities and equipment. The important takeaway is that in the best case scenario, your school of choice will have an exceptional reputation, accreditation and a state-of-the-art facility with newer equipment.

Job Placement Rates.  To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the culinary arts colleges you are examining. Low graduation rates are red flags that a number of students were dissatisfied with either the schools or the training and quit before graduating. They can also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to teach the curriculum. Request that the schools provide their job placement rates as well. If a college has a higher job placement rate, it will help verify that it has a great or outstanding reputation within the cooking field, in addition to a broad network of professional contacts. Be wary of any school that will not provide this information.

Location.  The culinary institute that you attend should be within driving distance of your Montevallo home, unless you have decided to move. You may consider attending college online, but you would still need to travel for your externship program. Alternatively, maybe you have chosen to attend a specific culinary arts college located in another state because of its prominence and programs offered. It would be a wise decision to check out the campus before enrolling, to make sure that you are satisfied with the area and your potential living conditions. Inspect the training facilities personally to make sure they are modern and that the equipment is state of the art. Remember also that a number of schools concentrate their job assistance programs within their regional communities, so select a location where you will satisfied working.

Class Sizes.  The most effective way to learn how to cook is with plenty of one-on-one training. If the culinary program you enroll in has bigger classes, you will undoubtedly get little personal attention from the teachers. The optimal manner in which to evaluate the interaction between instructors and students is to audit a few of the classes. Ask some of the students what their experience has been. Find out if they are satisfied with the amount of attention they get in class as well as the entire course of training. Also, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their teaching approaches are along with their backgrounds and qualifications.

Flexible Class Schedules.  There is no benefit to in enrolling in a cooking institute if you will be unable to attend the classes. Therefore confirm that the school you select provides class scheduling that will accommodate your active lifestyle. If you can only attend in the evening or on weekends because of your work schedule, make certain that the school you pick offers either weekend or night classes. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the cooking institute has a part-time offering. Also, find out what the make-up policy is if you have to miss a class because of family, work or other commitments.

Enrolling in a  Culinary Arts Program near Montevallo Alabama?

If you are considering attending culinary school near Montevallo AL, following is some interesting and useful information about the location of your new school campus.

Montevallo, Alabama

Montevallo is a city in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. A college town, it is the home of the University of Montevallo, a public liberal arts university with approximately 3,000 students. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city of Montevallo is 6,323. Dr. Hollie Campbell Cost, a professor in the College of Education at the University of Montevallo, serves as Mayor.

Montevallo is located at 33°6′18″N 86°51′46″W / 33.10500°N 86.86278°W / 33.10500; -86.86278 (33.1049, -86.8628).[3] A plaque on Reynolds Cemetery Road, just off Alabama State Route 25, in the eastern corner of the town, marks the geographic center of the state of Alabama. Middle Street, formerly known as Main Street, had its name changed in 1899 for this reason, upon the completion of a new state survey.[4]

The area where Montevallo is now was once controlled by the Creek Indians. After being acquired in 1814 Jesse Wilson claimed a small hill on the northern bank of the Shoal Creek and created a homestead there, making it the oldest settlement in Shelby County. Wilson's friends and family followed afterwards and also settled in the area, and a settlement known as Wilson's Hill developed on the site. The settlement's location at almost the exact center of Alabama meant it was considered one of the potential sites for the University of Alabama. In an attempt to encourage the university to choose the site the settlement changed its name to Montevallo, which is Italian for the hill in the valley.

Montevallo was used by local farmers as a market town where they could sell and package their produce. It was incorporated as a city in 1848. In 1853 a railway was built between Montevallo and Selma which allowed further economic growth to Montevallo and in 1856 a coal mine was created nearby leading to further growth.
